At the Well - Maintaining Peace In Times of Chaos

Gathering At the Well

Today's topic for At the Well is "Maintaining Home Peace In Times of Chaos". How well does that fit a Monday morning? Some discussion questions are:

Life's storms will come sometimes when we least expect them,
how do we give our children a "safe feeling" in the midst of a life storm?

Sometimes chaos is created by our own efforts of trying to do too much,
how can we maintain a peaceful home where chaos is prevented?

How can we as wives and mothers actually calm the storm?

The only predictable thing about the storms of life is that they will come and you will not be ready for them. In my previous post, I shared about a phone call we received while we were touring a college campus with my oldest son. I was trying to prepare our family for the changes of graduation and college when we got a phone call that brought an unexpected change. My uncle had a heart attack that morning and passed away. Through the space of a two minute call, our lives were forever changed. He lived very close to us and it is hard to comprehend that we won't be able to look up the hill and see him outside etc. His presence will be missed dearly by us.

My family seems to cope better through storms when our schedule of doing things stays somewhat the same or familiar. We try to go about the day like other days and then discuss the different things that must be done. A calm and peaceful attitude from me is vital for the the children sake. Children seem to feed off of the attitude of the parents. If the parents fall apart under stress, the kids will also. It is certainly ok to cry, to show emotion, to let them know this is a hard thing in life, but it is more important for them to learn that a fortitude and strength can be found in the Lord and that will enable them to weather the storms of life. Letting them hear your prayers for God's strength or to hear you read a portion of Scripture clearly portrays that our trust in in God who is all powerful and provides everything we need.

Many times through the years, I have created chaos in my home, by being too busy, having too many outside activities and truly trying to do too much. There were times when our days were a blur of school, homework, sports, dinner in the car and me always saying "Hurry up, let's go." An awakening came when one of my sons answered "I don't want to hurry". The secret that helps me maintain peace is to have a plan! Either written down on paper or in my head, but plan out as many details as possible. I evaluate if this activity is needed and pair down events for what is truly needed to attend. Home responsibilities must come first, family's needs met, dinner served, tidy house, etc. Husband and children need to know what I 'm going to do and when I"ll be done. If they are going along, a plan needs to be laid out to them what we're going to do there etc. Through good communication all aspects are covered and everyone knows what to expect and no one is floundering around wondering "what's going on?"

As mothers when the storms come, the best thing we can do to help calm them is to have our souls anchored in the Lord. Seek Him first for every decision, attitude and action. Seek His peace and direction and then move forward. Sometimes we need to get up and take one step, do the first thing that needs to be done, then the next thing. Ask God to let us move forward with a calm and peaceful spirit. Move purposefully, speak encouraging and hopeful words. Keep God's Word close to your heart. Here are a few of my favorite Scriptures for peace during the storms:

Isaiah 26:3 "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You..."
Isaiah 40:31 "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint."
Psalms 91:2 "I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."
Proverbs 18:10 "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe."

So, the storms of life will come, but when they come we have a strength and help greater than the storm and through Him, we will come through the storms of life stronger and better.

  1. As mothers when the storms come, the best thing we can do to help calm them is to have our souls anchored in the Lord. AMEN! You spoke the truth throughout this post and it resonated deep within. Anchoring to the Lord brings peace in every storm. It's only through Him that we have the presence of mind to do what needs to be done for our husbands and our little ones. Thank you for these words of wisdom!

  3. We always think we have to do so much, but it's amazing how God works when we do slow down. I pray God will show you and your family comfort at the passing of your Uncle.

  5. Wow what a wonderful post today.

"As mothers when the storms come, the best thing we can do to help calm them is to have our souls anchored in the Lord."

I loved this! So many times we as Moms set the standard as far as what the attitude around our us can be just be how much time we spend with our Lord. I have found when I slack in my time with Him, my attitude is not exactly the best it can be and that only trickles down to everybody else. Thanks for sharing today - Laurie

  9. I heard it said one time "God won't bring you to a storm that He won't bring you through." The storms come but God will guide us through.

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
