Spiritual Sundays is an opportunity to give and receive blessings as we prepare our hearts for worship. Over at Spiritual Sundays, bloggers post an inspirational post to share with others. It is great to take some visits to other blogs and be inspired and encouraged.
Today I will share a verse our family is working on this week. Family devotions are so important - a regular set apart time to read God's Word and to instill the things of the Lord into our homes and lives. I always am looking for something new for our family. Recently we began working through a book called "Life Training" by Dr. Joe White. Along with readomg the devotions, familes are encouraged to memorize Scripture. This week we are working on Psalms 1:1,2
1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Some thoughts on this verse that stand out to me are that blessings are a choice. This verse lays out the way to be blessed and gives direction on what not to do. We are admonished not to walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand in the way of sinner or sit in the seat of mockers. Notice the progression of association of the ungodly - walking in the counsel or listening to those who would give bad advice. Then standing in the way of sinners, this goes beyond listening but joining or standing with. Next is sitting with or being a part of scoffers or mockers. So, to be blessed or wise, we need to use caution. Then the last part of the verse gives what a blessed person can do - delight in God's Word and meditate on it - day and night. Keep God's Word near us and in our hearts.
May you be blessed today in the Lord!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this today!
ReplyDeletePsalms 1 is one of the Psalms that both my husband and I have memorized. I like to read the NIV version but we do all our memory work in KJV. The first verse in KJV is "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly. ."
ReplyDeleteLittle did we realize when we were memorizing this chapter how much we would need this as a guide. We were in need of a lawyer to help our granddaughter in a custody battle. (this is always a sad place to be) This scripture was our guide. We looked for a Christian lawyer, and when my husband met him, he told him about our choosing a lawyer, by the scripture in Psalms 1. The lawyer said, "Oh, that is one of my favorite chapters" and quoted the first verse. It is so refreshing to know there are still some very good Christian lawyers out there!
I think it is wonderful that entire families are memorizing scriptures together.

ReplyDeleteBlessings Joyfull...this is so refreshing and inspirational! How true it is that by reading God's Word as a family and encouraging memorization of Scripture with time set apart for God instills the best in people to develop that for a lifetime. Thank you for sharing Psalm 1 and your thoughts.
