At The Well

Over At the Well, which is hosted by Laurie, the discussion questions for today are:
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MENTORED BY SOMEONE?
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A CHRISTIAN MENTOR?
HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT TO PURSUE A GODLY MENTORING RELATIONSHIP?
I have not personally been mentored face to face with someone. But, I have learned much from women by watching and listening. Women seem to watch one another and take notice of things about each other. They notice things like shoes, purses, hair cuts. They also notice how they talk about their husbands, how they talk to their children, how they talk about each other. Women listen to other women talk and pick up things they say and catch attitudes they reflect.
God's Word tells us that what is inside our heart is what comes out in our actions, words and attitudes. The things that come out sometimes are not even noticed by our own selves, but people are always watching us. Fruit of the Spirit can crop up in line at the grocery store, under stress at work, dealing with difficult people etc. So, it is very important how we carry ourselves in all ways and at all times. As we discussed At the Well last week, how important it is to have a daily devotional time, where God can fill us and we can in turn overflow to others. We can't impart, what we don't possess.
Some characteristics that personally appeal to me are a love for God and His Word, a powerful prayer life, joy, peace and kindness that extends from the inside out. I like to see women who are organized and efficient in their tasks. Women who carry themselves with integrity, faithfulness and a humble, serving spirit.
Some of who I would consider mentors by reading their books and being encouraged by are Elizabeth George, Anne Ortlund, Beth Moore, Elizabeth Elliot, Stormie O'Martan and Nancy Leigh DeMoss. In one of their books, someone mentioned directly asking someone who appeals to you and that you could learn from. Ask if they could spend even a day with you, talking and sharing some of the things which help them be what they are. I also receive encouragement from several bloggers. Meeting weekly or monthly with a mentor would be ideal, but time restraints may hinder that. Blogs can be read at your convenience, books also are on your time. Watching and learning are great tools and evaluating the actions that appeal to you with God's Word is a great tool to be continually learning and growing.

  1. Great points here. These are wonderful books, and they teach lessons that we don't hear much anymore. Love your perspective on this. ;)

  2. Thank you for sharing with us AT THE WELL. You are right about us women not having the time we need to be in a mentoring relationship - the shaping and molding can come in alot of different ways - one on one; on the phone; blogging; etc. May God inspire all of us to reflect His image as women watch us in our daily walks. -Blessings, Laurie

  4. I agree about getting much out of reading books by Godly women. And, I have been very fortunate to have discipled with my pastor's wife weekly for the last 10 months.

  5. WOW! That's incredible sister!

I actually wrote about something similar...and now it's just occuring to me that today is NOT Monday! HA!!!

Anyway, I just wrote a post on the fact that those who discipled me were women I've never met before, except for one who I knew personally, but we were never in a discipleship relationship. Like you said, I just watched her and how she lived her life.

I think that's pretty cool, God provided discipleship for us the same way!

    GREAT POST!

    Bless you sister,
    Sunny

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
