Arise and Shine - In the Ordinary

Today's At the Well is being hosted by Lisa over at A Second Generation of Homeschooling

The Topic For Today Is:
Arise and Shine:
Being an Exceptional Mother in the Midst of the Ordinary

Discussion Questions:
1. What daily tasks seem mundane or monotonous to you?
2. How can we change our outlook when completing these tasks?
3. What impact do these tasks have on our husband and children? How does it make a difference in their lives?
4. Is it okay to focus on earthly recognition when completing these tasks for our loved ones, or is receiving an eternal reward sufficient?
What does Jesus think is more important? Should that be our focus, as well?

Wow! This is sure to be an interesting topic. As women usually the daily tasks of the home fall upon us. The cleaning, the cooking, the dishes, the laundry, keeping order in the home etc. Most of these tasks are done over and over, the same things day after day and can seem mundane or monotonous.
But, our outlook is the key here. The tasks HAVE to be done - period. If we look at these tasks as our God given ministry and purpose, it can change our attitude. Colossians 3:17 says "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." If we can get it into our hearts that everything we do has a purpose and can be done unto the Lord, it will transform our outlook. The Lord expects our best - in everything. When we give our best, it shows. If our attitude is to be pleasing to Him, a joy and a purpose will follow and we will clearly see the tasks we are doing are more than just ordinary tasks, they are building blocks for our home and family.
The impact of daily tasks is enormous. Most of us do things a certain way, why? Because that is what we saw growing up. If we can grasp that everything we do is impacting and shaping our families, we can run our homes with efficiency knowing that we are planting seeds of work ethics, cleanliness and organization into our children. Our husbands learn how we like things done and we learn how they like things to function in the home. This helps create the atmosphere of peace in our homes where love abounds and where we can be accepted and loved for who we are.
Everyone loves recognition for a job well done. This should not be the sole focus for our work, but rather a motivation to continue to lavish our loved ones with more kindness and love. As Jesus walked the earth, He met need after need with abundant kindness and love. When our hearts are filled with His love, it will overflow into the lives of those around us and it will turn our focus from the selfishness of wanting recognition to the joy of serving others around us even through the mundane tasks.
There will always be days when we feel we just can't face another sink of dirty dishes or another load of laundry. That is the time to pray, asking God for a refreshing of His love into our hearts to enable us to "do it again" and to do it with His attitude. Read His Word and remind ourselves of our blessings, be encouraged to be a giver. Always keep in mind that a kind word, a smile, a delicious dinner or a kept up home is a ministry with an everlasting impact. May God bless the ministry of the ordinary!

  6. I appreciate your timly thoughts.

For me this was a tough one. I had
to pray and seek God's guidance.

Housework is at the bottom of my list, but after this study it will
    be moving on up.

  10. "But, our outlook is the key here....If we look at these tasks as our God given ministry and purpose, it can change our attitude." This is very true! God has changed my outlook and my attitude towards my housework and everyday tasks. The key is keeping His perspective.

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
