Becoming Titus 2: What Does It Mean To Be Reverent?

Extravagant Grace

Over at Extravagant Grace, eLisa has started a series Becoming Titus 2 in 2010.  Today the discussion centers around "What Does It Mean To Be Reverent?"  The Scripture the Titus 2 woman is based on is a familiar one:
"the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,  to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed."

Today our focus verse is Titus 2:3  Here are a few translations of the verse:
Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, (NASB)
Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God (NLT)
In the same way, teach older women to be holy in their behavior (New Century Version)
Guide older women into lives of reverence so they end up as neither gossips nor drunks, but models of goodness.  (The Message)

A definition is : Reverent - feeling, exhibiting, or characterized by reverence; deeply respectful:

Before we were married and I was dating my to be husband, I had a best friend that I was very close to.  We did everything together, stayed at each other's home each weekend, shopped, ate and enjoyed each other's company. We tended to be on the silly side and often brought out laughter and fun in each other. We found humor in any situation, to the point of silliness, by laughing with and at others. Many times in public places we would be overcome with "the giggle's".  We enjoyed life and loved to laugh and act silly.

When it became apparent that my to be husband and I were getting closer and falling in love, I sensed that he would like me to act more mature. His personality carried more of a serious and mature manner.   A choice had to be made, keep on livng a life of fun and sillieness, or gain a more reverent attitude.  I chose him (of course) and that serious manner that was such a part of him, matured him into a man of leadership, integrity, widsom and made him into a wonderful husband and father. Each day I respect him more and more and realize that a silly, immature woman would truly bring him shame.

As Christian women, we represent the Lord God, Most High.  He is to be revered as the Holy One.  As our actions show respect and love for Him, there are certain ways to act and certain ways we should not act.

Acts of reverence include guarding our tongues and actions and being models of goodness.  Gossiping, slander, negative or putting down of others ultimatley reflects unfavorably on us and on Him.  We don't need to even mention drunkeness!  Talking unfavorably about our husband, reflects bad on him, but also us.  A wise wife does him good - all the days of his life.

Acting reverently may include self control and maturity, but does not need to make us into stoic old women!  By clothing ourselves with the virtues of compassion, kindess, love, thankfulness and joy, we represent the Lord honorably and set an example for women younger than us.  Smiles, a kind word or touch, a positive response and a thankful attitude can be attractive traits that draw others to our Source.  There is peace and joy in following the direction of the Lord.  Being reverent begins with an ackowledgement of His holiness and our desire to live a life to please Him.

  2. It's very interesting because you are the second woman who included gossip. I believe you are so right. We should mature and become more like Christ. It's one thing to care about others and another to gossip about them.

    Great truths.

    Blessings,
    Debbie

  3. Thank you so much for writing this blog It is the first time I have seen it and I was frusturated doing a study on 1 Timothy 3:8-13 and wanted to know the meaning of Reverent and all the dictionary terms wouldn't explain how to be a reverent woman. Thank you also for the story about you and your husband, I just got a phone call saying that I am not going to beable to go on a double date with my courting partner and I was sad but choosing to be mature about it and not have a hissy fit and stomp about it. I chose to be reverent in this time. thanks In Jesus Love, Tepreene

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
