Becoming Titus 2 - Teaching What Is Good

Extravagant Grace

Titus 2:3-5

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Over at Extravagent Grace we are journeying through Titus 2:3-5, bit by bit and along the journey we are breaking down this verse and learning to apply it to our lives.  "Becoming Titus 2" is not something that we "just do". It is a journey or walk with the Lord as He shows us behavior, character and godly habits that line up with His Word.  Today's section is "to teach what is good."

Last time we went through some things the Titus 2 woman is not to do or be.  She is not to allow things like slander to be a part of her vocabulary.   She is not to be addicted to wine or be bound by things not of the Lord.  So now, moving on we learn that she is to teach what is good.  Hmmm.

If I can share openly, there are times that I would like to go up to some women that I see hanging around with provocative clothing, a filthy mouth and a disgraceful attitude and teach her a thing or two!  I could certainly show her how to act much better than she is.  But would that be well received from me with a prideful or haughty attitude that thinks I am better than her?  NO. She probably wouldl not learn or want to become anything like me, but despise me for looking down on her.

Every woman of God can look back to the times before the Lord changed her heart and see some unholy behavior.  It is the heart that is grateful for God's grace that helps, heals and motivates one to seek higher ground.  This is the heart of Titus 2 teaching.  We are not perfect, but forgiven and on a journey to holiness, walking with our hand in the Savoir's hand, lest we fall on our own.

When we grasp what God's grace has done for us and allow Him to work out the things in our lives that are not pleasing to Him, we have a heart ready to receive His teaching and carry it along with us and also extend it to others.  We teach what is good as we journey through our day, in our words, actions and activities.  We show others the good God has done in our lives as we overcome tempation to gossip, choose our priorities wisely, treat our husbands with respect and love and uplift our children.   In the grocery store, at the ball field, in the church nursery, visiting with friends, are all opportunties to teach what is good.  Through our blogs, our Facebook and Twitter status, our email responses there are a multitude of ways to show by example and teaching what is good.

Some other translations of this portion of this verse are enlightening:
  • but to be examples of goodness
  • but to be examples of virtue.
  • teachers of what is right;
Some commentaries further expound:
  • teachers-in private: not in public (1Co 14:34; 1Ti 2:11, 12); influencing for good the younger women by precept and example.
  • Teachers of good things. Both by example and precept. How beautiful is an aged Christian woman of saintly life!
What an honor, priviledge and responsibility it is to become a Titus 2 woman!  What a joy it is that we are not doing this alone, but it is the overflowing grace of God that helps us.  May we always seek out and be ready to teach what it good as we go through our day!  Be a blessing!

  2. I know that your teaching..and wisdom shared on your blog...is certainly a blessing and encouragment to me! Thank you for your faithfulness and willing to share so honestly.

Isn't it funny - how we can so easily forget exactly what we were before God saved us...and then matured us some along the way?? I certainly need to be more patient with the younger Christians (and, goodness, with the lost!)

    Thanks again-

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
