Give the Gift of Grace

Now that the Christmas season is in full swing and we even have some cold Christmas weather here in the deep south, I am now totally "in the Christmas spirit"!  Each year as Christmas approaches, there comes this little 'click' in my spirit that allows me to fully embrace the joys and excitement of Christmas.  I eagerly look forward to reading Christmas devotions and books, doing some Christmas baking, wrapping presents and attending festive gatherings.

But in the midst of all these festivities, a close eye needs to be kept on my heart.  When too many activities and things that need to be done come at once, stress tries to enter in also.  If I allow my mind to think on the list of things to be done, people to buy gifts for, food to prepare, creating a Christmas atmosphere for the home etc., insecurity, indecisiveness and a harried state of mind begin to attempt to steal the Christmas joy.  Questions like "Is my gift good enough?", "How does my food dish taste?", "Do I have enough decorations up?" try to sneak in and bring emotions that cause distress.  Instead of Christmas love and peace, my words may be sharp with my family and in my haste, the many opportunities to be a blessing at this time of year, turn into just "things to do". My home and family tend to get neglected.

Being watchful and aware that these things may creep in, it does a heart good to be pro-active!  The first step is always with prayer, reading God's Word and time with Him.  As we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate God's greatest Gift - His Son Jesus.  Jesus came to earth as the bridge and only way to redeem our sinful natures and connect us with a holy God who claims us as His children.  What a gift of grace!  How undeserved by us and how loving and extravagant from God.

But this gift, keeps on giving!  God's gift of grace lives in our hearts.  He enables us - not of ourselves, but He equips us and covers us with His grace to give out to others.  As our hearts reflect on His gift this season, thankfulness takes root and brings joy.  Joy brings a desire to share, love and give our best to others.  Each of us are also given talents and abilities which are God's gifts to us.  Those little things that we are good at, can be used to be a blessing to others.  Instead of following the temptation to be all things to all people, may we utilize the gifts that God has given us to bring glory to Him.  Use those gifts to be a blessing this season.  Whether it is cooking, making special cards, decorating, generosity, sharing a special verse or word, we have the ability to be a blessing to others and find fulfillment in the promise "it is better to give than to receive".

Before we begin each day this season, may we be mindful to put on God's grace.  May His grace cover us everywhere we go and in everything we do this Christmas!  Giving the gift of grace first in our homes and in our families will make our home sing and be eliminating distractions and keeping our focus on Christ, His peace will rule in our hearts.

One more thing!  Courtney's challenge this week is to remember to REST!  Much of the above can be brought on by fatigue. Avoid spiritual and physical overload by scheduling a few early nights.  Take your Bible with you to bed and read for 5 minutes. Read in Isaiah 7:14, Micah 5:2, Jeremiah 23:5, and Isaiah 53. These are prophecies that were fulfilled by the birth and life of Jesus. They will bring joy, peace and strengthen our faith as we reflect and ponder of the power of God's Gift.

Remember, reflect and put on God's grace everywhere you go this season.  You will bring joy to many and enjoy the best Christmas ever, because it will be rooted in your heart all year long!

  1. I love your fireplace and tree at the top - so sweet and cozy!!! And I love what you shared - it's hard to keep God at the top of our list - but he is so worthy! Keep walking with the King!

  2. Enjoying these thoughts, "put on God's grace" and "giving the gift of grace first." I'm trying so hard to be calm in all I do and praying about what I do because we have a lot of committments and a lot of company. These are things I WANT to do and LOVE doing, however, I need to keep grace in all these things. Thank you!

  3. Amen! Imagine if we leave the house with the intentional thought and prayer of blessing someone that day and extending grace to them: to the driver who cuts us off, to the person in line who cuts ahead of us, to the busy shoppers who push their way through, etc.

Imagine if we seek to be a blessing instead of a pain! Great reminder and thanks for linking up to Making Your Home Sing Monday!

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
