Consume Me, Lord

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:16

One of my favorite things about winter is sitting and gazing at a fire in the fireplace.  There is just something about the warmth and glow of a fire that just draws you in.

At my home, my husband is chief fire starter followed by my sons.  Early one cold morning, I attempted to get the fire going.  I followed their example – newspaper, lighter wood then stacked firewood.  I didn’t want a huge blaze, so I just used a few pieces of firewood.  My fire quickly caught, then fizzled out.  Chief fire starter came to my rescue!  He told me, “You have to build it up high with many pieces of wood so the fire will consume the wood and put the warmth out quickly.”

This verse came to mind.  If we let ourselves be consumed with the Lord, be filling our hearts with His Word and prayer, those we come in contact will feel His warmth and be drawn to Him through us.  When His love in our hearts overflows in good words, attitudes and actions, people will want to gaze at what is inside us – which is God’s love.  He will draw them to Himself, using His love through us.  Our God is a consuming fire!

  1. Joyce,
THIS was wonderful! I too am a fire gal and I have fire starting challenges. This was just the perfect verse....the light shines when the fire burns brightly...
    love it!

  2. Yes although in the middle of summer I can relate to the joys of a fire.
I think the very best fires were at camps where we had a huge fireplace and it just burned and glowed.
    Light and warmth.

  3. Beautiful post!

  4. Love that verse!! I have to remember that He is shining through me, no matter what kind of day I am having, I need to show HIS works through me.. not a grumpy, cranky mother yelling at her kid to stop running and knocking things over in the store. I need to be more patient and showing of His great strength in me...

    Great WFW!

  5. Beautiful verse and your thoughts are great.

  6. I agree, there is something so inviting about the glow of a warm fire - just the way we should be to others. Great stuff!

  7. I pray that the light of the Lord shines out through me. More of Him and less of me. Happy WFW!

  8. Well said!! I too LOVE fire and this is one of my favorite scripture. I've never made the connection but it works so well :)

  9. Oh Lord, light the fire of my heart! And keep it burning...

  10. What a beautiful picture and beautiful thoughts to go with it. Our God IS a consuming fire like you said, but it also brings to mind the words of Lamentations 3, where it says because of His great love we are not consumed. So we think of the opposite extreme of where we would be without Him - what a joy that we have His love consuming us, and the hope of eternal life. May our lights shine brightly for Him!!

  11. Yes it His love and grace, His strength and mercy that keeps us from"fizzling out"!! Thanks for sharing this.

  12. Great post....and I am sure I could not start a fire on my own if my life depended on it!:)

Thank you for sharing your commment. It is a joy and blessing to hear from you and your words are appreciated.
