It's Monday, What's Your Plan???

Happy Monday!! Are you a Monday lover or a Monday hater? Mondays can symbolize the end of the weekend, the end of fun, relaxing and doing what we want to do days. But it can also symbolize the newness of opportunities, another chance to do better, work harder, accomplish what we are working towards. Regardless of our Monday attitude, it comes along once a week!

I enjoy the challenge of a new week. Currently, I'm striving to be a little healthier. Eat a little better, exercise a little more. Weekends allow me an indulgence, to eat some things I love, but may not line up with my quest for a healthier lifestyle! Mondays allow me to get back on track!   My goal to be more healthy and fit will bring the reward of greater energy and a toned and fit body.  But, there is no shortcut.  It takes discipline to eat right and exercise.

This week in the 5 Weeks- 5 Disciplines- 5 Challenges, the challenge is for our spirit - discipline in our spiritual life. If we are a Christian, we are also a disciple - one who constantly learns and seeks to be like Christ. That may sound like a simple sentence, but it can be a very hard thing to live out. Often it is a battle between what we want to do, and what we know is right. God's standards are always right, but it may seem we always fall short because our standards are easier to reach. To keep God's standards in sight and in our aim, we must stay connected to Him. There is no shortcut to spiritual growth. It takes time, dedication, diligence and denial to self. Prayer, Bible reading and obedience are the needed things to grow in the Lord. Taking time for these is a true discipline, but one that will bring beautiful results - a heart and life that reflects Him.

Sometimes there are things we need to cut out of our life.  Things or habits that can distract us from reaching toward our goal.  Spiritual discipline often brings these areas to light.  It may be like a little red flag that waves over an area that needs God's transformation.  Instead of moaning what we are losing, we can look at this as a gap between where we currently are and where God is trying to grow us to become.  This place is somewhere God can transform us to make us more like Him., an area where things don't line up with His character.  Spiritual discipline can close that gap and move us toward becoming the person we were meant to be.  Our ultimate goal is to be transformed in the image of our Lord.

The first step to any discipline is to commit. This week's challenge it so commit to read God's Word before we do anything else.  The length of time isn't important, what matters is the discipline of putting Him first in our day and allowing Him to set the tone of our heart for the day.

Where to begin?  A chapter from Psalms, Proverbs or the book of John are great places to start.  For a maturing Christian, reading some of Paul's letters give guidance and direction for the Christian's life - Ephesians, Colossians, Romans are full of godly wisdom.  But the best place to begin is by getting up and opening God's Word ....'Just Do It'!

"being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;"  Philippians 1:6

  2. "This place is somewhere God can transform us to make us more like Him., an area where things don't line up with His character." Tis resonated with me- I am trying to do better in 2012 in living Spiritual disclipines- in fact my devotional this year is Spiritual Disciplines- Valerie Hess- thanks for reinforcing the need to put what I learn into practice. To be more like HIm- requires daily steps-taken moment by moment. Thanks for your words- I needed those today.

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We

Relationships and Redemption

In every friendship or relationship, there is a common hope that they will grow and flourish. There is something inside of us that longs for a 'happy every after' story. We dream about it and work to make that happen. But in reality, relationships are a challenge. The bridging of values, lifestyles, interests and sacrificing for another are simply hard things to do! No matter how much we dream of the perfect fit, some relationships will not endure the stress.  When differences appear and tensions arise, prayer can change situations, attitudes and ourselves. For the Christian, we know God can transform, change, heal. We cannot change others, but prayer opens us the door for God to step in and answer. God desires transformation, but does not demand it. The gift of free will allows us to choose to say Yes or No to Him.  Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Take notice of the first two words: “If possible …” This implies that some

A Blank Page - A Great Way to Fill It

A blank page - that is the first view of a new blog post. It has been a while since I have faced the blank page of my little blog! A blank page can bring a variety of emotions - emptiness, anxiety, pressure to perform or emotions such as inspiration, encouragement or simply bursting to share something. But there is always something fresh and exciting about the blank page of a New Year. Happy 2023! This is always a time in my life where inspiration and plans are formed and ready to be implemented for greater change. Aspirations may start strong, but alone do not make a difference. It takes consistency to create change. The changing or adding small habits is a key to great changes. A habit that has been beneficial in my life for many years is rising early. It began when the children were small and was the only pocket of time I had to myself. Through the years, mornings have become my favorite time of the day. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we go to bed early and rise early.
