Silence, Solitude, Sweat

I am a habit runner. Not a running fanatic, not a competitive runner, but one that knows if I don't run at all, the ability to run will vanish.

A habit runner does the same things, the same way, almost every run! My routine consists of a regular running day with a regular running route. Part of the routine involves listening to podcasts.

Recently, I've been aware of the value of practicing stillness and quietness. There is always noise around us, but to find inspiration and soul searching, requires a deliberate attempt to find quiet times and places. A new practice I found was during morning walks, leaving the ear buds at home and simply walking and talking to God.

A recent morning found me preparing for a run, but with a new phone, the Bluetooth ear buds would not connect. The old fashioned wired ear phones would not fit in the new phone. Minutes passed trying to get this to work. The first thought was I cannot run without something to listen to, but this was run day and the only day to get it in!

A new plan was to pray while running, so off I went. Beautiful morning, heart ready to pray outload, but I soon realized I couldn't' talk and run at the same time! Decided to continue on and try a different way and soon fell into the soothing sounds of birds singing and feet hitting the pavement.

Soon, inspiration began flooding my soul. Thoughts, ideas and parallels of life began forming.

One recurring inspiration contrasted different kinds of run with how to embrace life challenges, projects or seasons

Most new ideas begin with Excitement. We love something Fresh, something New.

In life or during a run, we begin at a good speed with good energy. The finish line or completion is still a ways ahead, but the burst of inspiration creates energy.

Another phase is Building or Continuing.

In a run or moving towards a goal, the newness will wear off, and energy begins to wane a little bit. This is a great time to find a good pace to keep. A mind set of determination to continue will combat the tinges of fatigue that hinders advancement. Keeping strong, eyes on a place to land is where determination is needed.

Endurance

When fatigue or challenges slow us down, this is the time to keep the goal in sight, move slower, but keep moving steady, and focus on each step. Being consistent and not allowing excuses or reasons to stop you will propel you to reach your place.

My earbuds began working for this week's run, but the lesson I learned will stay with me awhile! Hope this encourages you to find value in:

Sometimes We Score, Sometimes We Block

Our family is in the midst of little league soccer season. My youngest son is playing and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is pretty good at the sport, but what makes it so great is that he loves it! He counts the days until the next game or practice. He loves his coach and teammates. He has moved up an age level this year and the players are working more like team, passing to each other and watching out for each other during play. During the last game, my son scored two goals, they were the only goals of the game. In today's game the team scored eight goals. My son came up afterwards to me and said, "I didn't score today, but I blocked". What a powerful truth those words can hold. In life, sometimes we score, sometimes we block. Sometimes we do great things, we excel, we achieve, we meet our goal - we score! There are also times we see the needs of others, sometimes they are sad or hurting, we block their hits. We look out for them so they can score. We...

Word Filled Wednesday – Act Justly

He has shown you, O man, what is good;       And what does the LORD require of you                But to do justly, To love mercy,       And to walk humbly with your God?    Micah 6:8 Sometimes we struggle so hard with the question “What does God want us to do and be?”  This verse is a simple yet powerful reminder of some simple things that God requires of us.  Act and do justly, love mercy and walk humbly before God.  There are numerous opportunities each day to do justly, to do the right thing or to make the right choice.  We love mercy when we show kindness or mercy oftentimes to those who do not deserve it.  Walking humbly before God is acknowledging He alone is God.  He is the I AM – no one else is.  When we give Him the glory He is worthy of, it will humble our heart before Him....
