One Thing Needed

"But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42

The journey to becoming A Woman After God's Own Heart begins with a heart devoted to God. Jesus told a story of 2 sisters - Mary and Martha. Jesus and His disciples arrived at the sister's home for a meal. Martha was consumed by the preparations of the event, the effort it took and the numerous details that this meal would entail. Jesus was coming - it had to be perfect! (I can so relate to her!). But, Martha failed to discern the priority and importance of time with God. Martha was so busy doing things FOR the Lord that she failed to spend time WITH Him.

But Mary chose the one thing needed, she put worship on the top of her to-do list. She chose the one thing needed. She knew nothing could take the place of time in God's presence. Time spent hearing and worshiping God can never be taken away, for it is time spent in eternal pursuits, time that earns permanent and everlasting dividends.

As women devoted to God, we can make the daily choice to live for Him as we follow Mary's example.

Choose God's ways at every opportunity. Commit yourself to actively choose God and His ways in decisions, words, thoughts and responses. God is to be our ultimate priority. We want the choices we make to reflect that. "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment." Mark 12:31 The word 'priority' means 'to prefer'. We want to choose to prefer God's ways in all things. This doesn't take deep theology, it is simply a pause and prayer that acknowledges God and asks - "God, what would you have me to do - or think - or say - here?

Commit yourself to God daily. Our devotion to God is strengthened when we offer Him a fresh commitment each day. Each morning, start fresh with a prayer giving God all that you are and all that you have. Nurture the habit of placing each of our blessings in God's loving hands. A surrendered life lays everything on God's altar.

"God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him." Andrew Murray
